Hispanic Heritage month memo
President Obama’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation states “Whether we trace our roots to those who came here on the Mayflower, who settled the Southwest centuries ago, or who joined the American family more recently, we share a common belief in the enduring promise of America -- the promise that regardless of where we come from or what we look like, each of us can make it if we try.”
As we conclude this month-long celebration in which we recognized the achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans and celebrate the group’s diverse heritage and culture. This is a month to appreciate the changing demographics of our country, and learn more about the largest ethnic minority in the United States.
In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed National Hispanic Heritage Week to honor the contributions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the countries of Central and South America and the Caribbean. Twenty years later, Congress extended this recognition into an annual month-long celebration, from September 15 through October 15.
Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
The 2010 U.S. Census counted 50.5 million Hispanics with a projected 132.8 million by the year 2050, which will constitute 30 percent of the U.S. population. The United States now has the second largest population of Hispanics in the world. In over 25 states, Hispanics are the largest minority. This has created a boon in Hispanic-owned businesses which have increased by 44 percent since 2002 with corresponding revenues of over $350 billion.
